Sick Day and A Poem a Week

Today started for me as usual, until I was walking out the door.  My nanny, that watches my boys in the morning, calls to cancel because she was sick.  So I thought, "Yay me!  I get a free day to stay at home with my boys and attend Gavin's preschool circus!"   It just so happens, that not even an hour after receiving that phone call that I come down with a stuffy nose and swollen glands.  So my nanny's sick day really turned out to be my own.  Oh well!  I got to see Gavin as a lion, seal, and an elephant at the preschool circus!!  It was just completely adorable!! It doesn't happen very often that I get to bring my baby to school in the morning because I have to be at school myself.  How did I get so lucky to be able to do it two times in one week!  LUCKY!!

During the little down time that I had today, I managed to complete this poem packet for you to download.  I have been using these poems from the beginning of the school year and never thought to post them.  I use the poems in my poetry station for students to practice handwriting, fluency, and word work.  You can use the printed pages as is, or you can make more work for yourself (like I do, lol) and rewrite them onto a large chart paper.  Either way, your students will love singing the songs and will enjoy writing them into their own poetry journal.  Click HERE to download "A Poem a Week."

This download is a 51 page compilation of fun poems/songs that you can use in your classroom for each of the school months. Each poem is attractively decorated with Thistlegirl Design's graphics.

The strategically placed QR codes will keep them striving to get the correct answer. Students will solve the addition/multiplication problems in order to match the princess with her prince.
Click HERE to download this FREEBIE!!!

This FREEBIE contains a Prince and Princess matching game for each grade level:

K-single digit addition (adding 1)
1st-single digit addition
2nd-double digit addition with regrouping
3rd-triple digit addition with regrouping
4th-double digit multiplication
5th-triple digit multiplication

Each grade level contains a grade specific recording sheet that correlates to the math problems in the Prince/Princess matching game for that specific grade level.

QR Codes: Students will solve the problems and find the answer.
{**Stress to students not to write beyond the barrier around the QR code or it will not scan properly.**}
Students will use an iPad2, iPod touch, or other product that allows QR code scanners to be accessed. They will use the technology tool to scan the QR code to see if they obtained the correct answer.

Please share this FREEBIE with the other grades at your school so everyone can take advantage of this wonderful resource.
If you have any questions on QR Codes, please email me at michelle83mcelhinny@gmail.com.

Things I "LOVE" (nothing to do with teaching) :-)

Okay, so I've been mentally compiling a list of things that I LOVE right now!  So here they are...in no particular order.

My Family:
This is one of the takes from our family portrait session during Christmas 2011.  Gavin is 4 and Landen is 1.  They are just now in the "monkey see, monkey do" stage and it certainly goes both ways.  My husband, Ryan, has really become a great dad and husband over the years.  I don't know what I'd do without him...he's also helping to support my new favorite, "Yogurt 101" (see below, hehe).  :-)

Clinique Almost Powder Make-up:
I've really been searching for a make-up that I really liked and I think I have found a winner!  YAY!!  I have been going back and forth between Clinique and Bare Essentials for the past few years...and I have finally settled down with just one of them!  :-)  Clinique's Almost Powder make-up provides the perfect amount of coverage and makes my face look flawless!

iPhone:
I don't think I could live without my iPhone!!!  No really!  haha  It is by far THE best phone that I have had!  I don't think I'll ever get another phone that isn't made by Apple!  They sure do know what they're doing!!! Apple=LOVE!!

C.O. Bigelow Lemon Lip Cream:
I never thought that I would like a lemon flavored anything, especially when it comes to my lips, but OHmiGOSH!  This stuff is AHmazing!!!  I just LOVE the softness effect!! You can achieve soft lips after just an hour of using this lip cream!!  I don't think I'll ever go back to my other brands now.
Yogurt 101:
This is my new LOVE!!!  My hubby decided to run out for the bread that he forgot to pick up, lol, and he comes back with a special treat for me!  It was caramel espresso frozen yogurt with cookie dough pieces and m&m's!!  Let me just tell you...that was a little cup of HEAVEN right in my mouth!  It was soooo yummy that I sent him out the very next day for me to try a new flavor!  This time, I had vanilla bean frozen yogurt with fresh strawberries, and OHmyGOSH...it was better than any ice cream around.  If you haven't tried any of the new frozen yogurt places around you, you're missing out!!!  The bad thing about this new favorite of mine is that it's actually in walking distance from my house!  :-p

Sorry for such a long post, but I just thought I'd share all of these amazing things with you that just make my life good!  It doesn't take much to make a girl happy: family, good make-up, her cell phone, good lip cream, and something yummy to eat!!  That's all I need to keep a smile on my face!!  Oh and I can add one more to my list right now...my favorite Victoria's Secret flannel pajamas...LOVE!!  I hope you all have a great week!  Make it a good one!!

Common Core Based Presidential Adding Tens

Hello all, I hope you're having a great weekend!  I'm so excited that I get one extra day, since we have no school on Monday due to Presidents' Day.  I actually get to take my son to preschool on Monday since his school schedule is different from mine.  He just loves it when mommy gets to bring him and pick him up!  :-)  He just melts my heart!  On another note, I have another Presidents' Day activity for you:

This download is a math center that is based on the common core state standards.  It is differentiated to suit students' learning needs.  There are 3 levels of difficulty:  easy, medium, and hard.  Attached at the end of the download are blank activity cards for you to create your own number sentences and also a recording sheet for students to use while playing the matching game.  Click HERE to download this very cute president themed math center.

I hope you are loving all of the red, white, and blue!!!  Let's celebrate the famous president's that have impacted our country in a great way!  We're having a classroom debate next week to honor our presidents.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
